Cancellation Notice

Some things go on the calendar for a year out
Dates strung like bait for time and the great waves
Marking the passage of eras or the small slaps
Of holidays schooling around harvest and spring.

While I flip other pages, kicking to swirl flies
Off the back of my legs while summer is passing
In an empty majesty of water above and below,
The thing I haven't been attending to dies.

My own stomach drops--clenches--in sympathy.
Summer ripples. It had grown so calm
That I had begun to ignore the shadow's edge,
Filling the sedate water, shifting the lines.

  1. In these perilous times who knows what the result may be except a loss of time, a loss of friends and doing normal things and of course the loss of faith that all will be well. Sadly humans don't know how to be safe and look after themselves.

  3. The shadow's edge is indeed close this summer, and our lives seem suspended in time. Good write.

  6. We get so used to see these let down things that even when they are missing for a time, we still see them.

  7. Yes, that shadow's edge seems to follow us everywhere.

  8. I really like how this plays around with the idea of the lull we feel in the summer. I know for me there's a kind of fuzziness in the golden glow of days that tends to make me forget there is anything outside the moment. But there's always a danger of forgetting when being seduced by the summer lull. And not everything that's forgotten can be recovered easily.
