It's Just a Short Walk to the Post
She knows things that I should know--she's generous
There's an offer; she can feel my fear beneath her arms
While she calms horse and passenger at once.
Calls the motion, tells me to breathe.
But there are things I don't want to know.
I prefer the image to the motion; prefer to live
In the kind of harness that stables never keep polished
A dream that broke some years ago
That I've taped carefully together.
There are things that I don't want to know.
Greetings and good wishes, fellow poets/poetry readers. So...hoofed animals and my fear thereof. Let's call it the irrationality of the contagiously anxious. I'm generally happy to see cows, horses, donkeys, deer as I'm driving by, preferably well away from the road. Once we're in close proximity, I'm convinced a {{{Stampede of Epic Proportions}}} is about to begin. Probably with me.
-- Chrissa (currently not stampeding)
P.S. -- NaNo updates next Sunday, after the Festival of Lights. On a totally unrelated note: Is the rider a wizard? Is she contemplating the creeping developments she can hear beyond the edge of the frame? Also, sharing with The Sunday Muse and with Poets United, both of which are excellent places to find more poetry and stories and to see what other writers have discovered in the past week. Come, share. Poetry stampede!!!!!!

I share your trepidation of larger mammals. My husband keeps talking about doing horseback riding at some point. I fully support his desire to try it, but I am far less certain that I will join him. :D
ReplyDeleteLove it! And I relate. I like the harness line and the dream broken and taped together.
ReplyDeletePoetry stampede! I'm in favor of it!
ReplyDeleteI can feel the fear and know it well with other things. Still even in fear your words are beautifully rendered! I too love the idea of a poetry stampede! 🤩
ReplyDeleteI have no fear of cattle but horses and I don't seem to get along and I don't know why. I like your visual of preferring image to actual motion as in keeping it close instead of letting go and being part of the action. I may be off, but I like it that way.
ReplyDeleteMy sister has horses, which I help out with often, and they are very gentle beings........but one doesnt want to get stepped on, for sure! Best stay outside the fence.
ReplyDeleteMy aunt had horses and I rode a few times, they have gentle spirits but, get spooked easily. They seem to be able to sense human emotions.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautifully eloquent, Chrissa!❤️
ReplyDeleteI share your sentiment. Keep those hooves far away from me!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this post - and share your apprehension of horses. The one and only time I went horseback riding - the animal broke from a canter into a flat-out galloping-gallop. I fell off, knocking the air (literally) out of me for several minutes (believe me, something I am not keen to experience ever again). So yes … the only horses I'm interested in getting close to are the ones affixed to carousals (and only then, if I deem it necessary to safeguard a little one from - likewise - falling off ~ smiles ~
ReplyDeleteI share your irrational fear of hooved animals! And it's a wonderful poem; love the beautiful use of the repeated line.
ReplyDeleteOkay, Blogger just ate my comment. So, here it is again (if we get lucky, it won't be a double).
ReplyDeleteI said that I sat here rereading the second and last stanzas, and wondering if I felt the same. After a bit, I figured that I do (but in very specif circumstances). Most of time, I want to know everything.
I love the line "prefer to live in the kind of harness that stables never keep polished." Great image!
ReplyDeleteI've never mounted a horse for other reasons but this resonates nonetheless....
ReplyDeleteLove the refrain in this, Chrissa. I was told my father took me horseback riding when I was a kid, but sadly, I have no memory of it. I would love to try it, but would I?
