Come Under the Lemons
Come, under the lemons, where the rabbit
Left all the days to give rise to this tree.
We'll find the place to slip through sunlight,
Through clay, through wire.
Memory is a rabbit hole, watch your ankles--
Joy comes like a front in the morning
Turning the air into water and wind
Lifting and washing us.
Come, under the lemons, where the rabbit
Left us bitter and sweet and sun-yellow
Rising from the thick coastal mud, dark
And light, blooming.
Thankful for our small, mostly furry, family and for a community of poets this morning. Sharing with The Sunday Muse and Poets and Storytellers United. The amaryllis made it in time for the holiday! :)

I would run the risk of tripping on some rabbit holes to enjoy the gift of lemons, ready for me to make into something good.
ReplyDeleteLove the call to hope and beauty this sings out Chrissa! Truly lovely in every way! Love that amaryllis! Gorgeous! Thankful for you too my friend!! 🌻
ReplyDeleteI love this. Short, original, poignant, spot on. I especially love a "front" coming in the morning--nicely played. And isn't that how change--even good change--usually shows up?
ReplyDeleteOooh! Nice. "Through clay, through wire. Memory is a rabbit hole, watch your ankles" Nice pivot to the unexpected, play on the image. The lemons ground us in scent and color.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of memory as a rabbit hole! This is stunning, Chrissa 💝
ReplyDeleteHow could anyone refuse that invitation!
ReplyDeleteAwesome!
ReplyDeleteBeware the rabbit hole ... love how you used it in this poem.
ReplyDeleteThe rabbit holes can become tricky...
ReplyDeleteUnder the lemons and under the fence--I'm glad for the warning about my ankles. Loved sliding in to this poem.
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful I absolutely love your poem
ReplyDeleteSometimes you have to catch an ankle to find the sunny in lemons...love this poem
ReplyDeleteOh, Chrissa, you have paid such nice tribute to the little rabbit. And they do that, get displaced for our growing mess of subdivisions. Our, Cinco Ranch (Katy and Fulshear, Texas) were prairie and trees about two years ago. We have rabbits all over the place and a few alligators. Both are protected because they were here first.
ReplyDeleteSorry I'm so late in returning your comment.
Stay safe.
..
I like the idea of slipping through sunlight, but that wire and mud.
ReplyDeleteThis is very enticing. It lilts!
ReplyDeleteRabbits and I have a tenuous agreement but this was an enjoyable read.
ReplyDeleteLuv the rabbit hole and the ankle caution. Always necessary to adventure
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter Chrissa
Much🌼love
I feel refreshed, reading your lemony offering. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteAnd may "joy come in the morning" for all of us and end the death and pestilence about us!
ReplyDelete“Joy comes like a front in the morning.” So lovely.
